Time-Saving Tuesdays – Asda Beef Bourguignon with Merchant-Gourmet Red and White Quinoa

Just a little later than planned but you expected that didn’t you, come on we all know you did!

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Asda Beef Bourguignon with Merchant-Gourmet Red and White Quinoa

This is a mix and match one for you this week, it’s Asda’s Beef Bourguignon in a tin and Merchant-Gourmet’s Red and White Quinoa, why you ask? The reason is because I wanted to use them up lol.

Asda Beef Bourguignon cooking instructions and nutritional information

Asda Beef Bourguignon cooking instructions and nutritional information

The idea between a meal in a tin is that it’s quick and easy when your in a hurry. The tin describes it as

Beef chunks with mushrooms, silverskin onions and smoked streaky bacon in a red wine sauce.

The nutritional information can be seen in the picture above, I’m not sure why it states “hob heated”, would that make a difference for the nutritional content?

I cooked it in a saucepan and stirred it occasionally on a medium heat, it’s important to ensure that all the ingredients are hot. I served this with the Quinoa to use it up, the Quinoa had cooking instructions on the back of the packet.

The cooking instructions are clear and concise, and include cooking instructions for three types of microwaves. There was also cooking instructions for cooking on the hob…. but I didn’t see them when I was preparing things lol. I also didn’t realise you could eat it cold straight from the package…. win win!

The calories were quite high in this pack, I realise that it was a pack for two but if you were someone with a large appetite. There was also 15.2g of fat in the whole pack which again is quite high.

The package cleverly provides you with some handy hints on what to do with the contents of the package, it also gives you the link to the website for more information.

  • Serve warm with lightly spiced chicken, fresh coriander and a spoonful of natural yoghurt.

  • Combine with tuna, spring onions and a squeeze of lemon juice for a fresh lunchtime option.

  • Create a superfood salad by mixing quinoa, feta, soya beans, cucumber, pomegranate seeds and sugarsnap peas. Dress with soy sauce, olive oil and lemon juice.

The package states that Red and white Quinoa has a nutty flavouring and is firm in texture. As I said earlier it can be used straight from the pouch in a cold salad or heat in the microwave and mix with roasted vegetables and cheddar cheese.

Overall thoughts…

Where do I start, the Beef Bourguignon was ok, not brilliant but ok. It had a real winey taste to it, which I wasn’t overly fussy on and the texture to the ingredients weren’t a lot to be desired. I didn’t really get the smoked streaky bacon flavour and thankfully I couldn’t pick up the mushrooms. I was really disappointed and that’s why it’s getting a thee star rating3 stars

The Quinoa was slightly better although I don’t think it went with the dish I was serving it with, the accompaniment should have been mashed potatoes. I wouldn’t like to eat it cold from the pouch and I wasn’t’ overly enamored with the texture of it, but with some fish or chicken I suppose it would be a healthier option to rice. I’m awarding this four stars, I’ve tried lots of Merchant-Gourmet products over the years and this wasn’t one of my favourites.4 stars

In their favour though both products were quick and easy to prepare and not particularly expensive.Wheelie Good Meals Social Networking

Coming up next week for Time-Saving Tuesday we have my review of Tesco’s Italian Spaghetti Carbonara We’ll have the last installment in my Strictly Suppers range on the weekend, it’ll be my take on a Slimming World/Weight Watchers dish Fanta Chicken…. only I’m doing Tango chicken. Who do you want to win, personally I quite like Jay or Katie. Remember too, if you’ve got a product you’d like me to review get in touch on the methods above.

See you on the weekend

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Uncle Ben’s Chilli Con Carne and Rice and Dolmio Pasta Carbonara

It’s that time of the week again it’s Time-Saving Tuesdays, oh wait it’s not, well it’s Tuesday somewhere I’m sure, I’m late again, this feature should be called…. Time-Saving any day of the week 😆

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Uncle Ben's Chilli Con Carne and Rice and Dolmio Pasta Carbonara

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Uncle Ben’s Chilli Con Carne and Rice and Dolmio Pasta Carbonara

I was really looking forward to this one this week, I was thinking these were something different and they’d be ideal for Gemma and I in the office. As you can see we have Uncle Ben’s Chilli Con Carne and Rice and Dolmio’s Pasta Carbonara, I’m going to look at the moth individually.

Uncle Ben’s Chilli Con Carne and Rice

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Uncle Ben's Chilli Con Carne and Rice packet

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Uncle Ben’s Chilli Con Carne and Rice packet

There were two pots, one which contained the Chilli Con Carne mixture and the other which contained the rice. The rice wasn’t clumped together and the Con Carne mixture looked ok.

The cooking instructions were clear, and so was the nutritional information. As with most ready meals these days the cooking instructions were for microwaves which are 800W my microwave in the office is 700W so we added a minute on to it. This took about 2 ½ minutes to cook with our microwave, that’s really quick, time wise it’s ideal for a busy working day or for someone running around after children.

The pot contained 330Kcal, 5.7g Sugar and 1.2g Salt. I’m not sure if that’s good or not but personally I thought the calorie count was a bit high for what it was. The package describes it as:

Chilli con carne sauce with Beef, Beans and Sweetcorn, with our long grain rice in a separate pot.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Uncle Ben's Chilli Con Carne and Rice, rice and sauce together

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Uncle Ben’s Chilli Con Carne and Rice, rice and sauce together

We cooked the two pots following the instructions and then combined them, the Con Carne mixture looked quite dark, but I suppose you can’t judge a book by its cover. On to the next pot!

Dolmio’s Pasta Carbonara

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Dolmio Pasta Carbonara packet

Describing this is pretty much the same as describing the Chilli Con Carne Snack Pot…. to a point! Before we start this wasn’t looking quite so pleasant but with an open mind we tried it!

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Dolmio Pasta Carbonara Cooking Instructions and Nutritional Information

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Dolmio Pasta Carbonara Cooking Instructions and Nutritional Information

The nutritional information and cooking instructions were as clear as it’s predecessor. Again, there was an additional minute added to the cooking time because of the difference in wattage for the Microwave. The nutritional information 322Kcal, 3.1g Sugar and 1.22g Salt, this was slightly less than the Chilli Con Carne but the pack weighed less.

The package describes the product as:

Creamy carbonara sauce with Fusilli pasta – a delicious meal in two separate pots, giving you a great taste.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Dolmio Pasta Carbonara putting the ingredients together

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Dolmio Pasta Carbonara putting the ingredients together

You can see from above the sauce was creamy, although the pictures do not depict the gloopiness of the sauce. We mixed the two together and then tasted. I’ve purposely not told you what I thought about each of them, I’ll do that together next. Obviously like the Uncle Ben’s pot, the speed of it certainly goes in its favour.

Overall

I was quite looking forward to these two, the John West Steam Pot I’d tried before were good so I was hoping for the same with these ones. I’d taken them in to the office for Gemma and I to have when working on some Disability related work for Accessible News my voluntary group. We’d worked all morning and needed something to eat to keep us going. These didn’t do that 😥

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Dolmio Pasta Carbonara what we couldn't eat

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Dolmio Pasta Carbonara what we couldn’t eat

The Uncle Ben’s Chilli Con carne was very poor, there wasn’t really a spice taste to it, which you’d expect from a dish with chilli in the title. The rice was ok, the grains were easy to eat, but the sauce was bland with very little, if any, minced meat and minuet kidney beans.

Gemma was really disappointed with this, she couldn’t eat it, I tried it and I agreed. I don’t think I could recommend it to anyone really because other than the speed it doesn’t have a lot going for it. I’ve decided to award this one star, why, because it’s not as bad as it could have been. If you were desperately hungry it would fill the smallest of holes lol.1 star

However, that being said, it had more going for it than it’s Italian brother. The Dolmio Carbonara was awful, I know awful is an emotive word but I really have no flipping clue what to say that’s polite lol. It was bland beyond belief, had no smokiness that I could pick up. It was congealed in texture and the flecks of ham that went through it was barely noticeable, if you had a visual impairment you wouldn’t have seen them, I reckon these were flecks off the knuckle of a pigs trotter because you couldn’t taste them at all. I’m not able to award this a star, some may think I’m being harsh but it’s honestly how I feel. Have you tried them, if you have let me know what you think.

The picture earlier shows exactly how much of these pots we left…. never again!0 starsI’ve almost been writing this feature for a year, starting it in January this year. I’ve written 32 posts, not including this one and this was probably my most disappointing product to review.

Time-Saving Tuesday – Westlers Burgers in Onion Gravy

Time-Saving Tuesday – Westlers Burgers in Onion Gravy

I reviewed the Westlers Burgers some time ago and they were pants, but I think this has taken the biscuit.

I learned something interesting while researching this post – Dolmio and Uncle Ben’s are owned by the same company… you may not think it’s interesting but when you’ve tasted the two of these products it makes sense.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Slow and Steady

It’s Time-Saving Tuesdays again, I know posting about a Slow cooker seems to defeat the object entirely but it can be Time-Saving.  Put the ingredients in before you go to work or you take the children to school and then it’ll be ready when you come home… saving time.  Just leave it do it’s own thing, my friend Luke (Miley) swears by his and uses it all the time.  Here’s an info graphic that someone emailed me the link for, it’s great and will help you get the best use of your slow cooker.  Enjoy!

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Princes Chicken in a White Sauce

How are you all, it’s November already and it’s almost bonfire night… are you going anywhere? We used to have a big family and friends firework night every year but it stopped as people got older and everyone drifted apart, I’m not complaining loud bangs and Brittle Bones don’t go well together really 😆

This is an interesting one, it’s a meal in a tin, which may not sound very appealing to some of you but let’s give it chance.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Princes Chicken in a White Sauce, a meal in a tin

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Princes Chicken in a White Sauce, a meal in a tin

It’s Chicken in a White Sauce, I bought it when my parents were away a while ago and thought it was worth giving it a go. Don’t put your nose up to it, if you are someone who lives alone, on a low budget maybe or time restrained this is a meal in a tin – in my opinion it’s ideal.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Princes Chicken in a White Sauce Nutritional Information and Ingredients

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Princes Chicken in a White Sauce Nutritional Information and Ingredients

The ingredients are straightforward, there’s a few things in there that I haven’t heard of before such as Calcium Carbonate which is beyond my understanding. The calories were quite low 268kcal per tin, and a tin is two servings, the salt and sugar levels weren’t too bad either. It’s important to remember that you’d need to serve something with this tin, you can’t see it in the picture but I served it with mashed potatoes.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Princes Chicken in a White Sauce Cooking Instructions

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Princes Chicken in a White Sauce Cooking Instructions

The cooking of it is straight forward, I warmed it through in a sauce pan, it’s important to stir it regularly and not to let it boil, probably because the sauce will split. You can microwave it and the microwave instructions are clear and easy to follow, and accommodate older microwaves like mine. I enjoyed this, it could be served with lots of things, it does need seasoning, especially pepper but like always that’s a personal choice. The serving suggestion is to top with short crust or puff pastry, brush with an egg wash and cook in a medium oven until golden brown. It also says for a luxurious meal add pan fried mushrooms or ham to the pie filling.7 stars

I’ve awarded this seven stars, it’s convenient, easy to cook and with a bit of seasoning and some accompanying vegetables it makes a great meal.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Chicken and Chorizo Paella

This was a surprise for me because my mother bought it while out shopping with her friend one day. I didn’t know what to expect if I’m honest but I thought I’d give it a go…. it’s rude not to 😆

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Chicken and Chorizo Paella in it's packaging

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Chicken and Chorizo Paella in it’s packaging

The package weighed 330g which obviously included the packaging but I had my doubts as to how filling it would be, I was wrong it was really filling and certainly enough for a light lunch. The Paella can be warmed, see the cooking instructions below:

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Chicken and Chorizo Paella Cooking Instructions

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Chicken and Chorizo Paella Cooking Instructions

The cooking instructions were easy to follow, and were very informative, they helped you to cook it from frozen or from chilled. The only negative would be that they didn’t take into account a lower wattage microwave…. like the one I bought off Noah when he dismantled his ark 😉 !

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Chicken and Chorizo Paella Ingredients

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Chicken and Chorizo Paella Ingredients

The ingredient list is also excellent because it doesn’t contain anything that I hadn’t heard of and the majority of them I’d used myself in previous recipes. The list was quite mouth watering really, it was almost as good as the meal itself.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Chicken and Chorizo Paella Nutritional Information

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Chicken and Chorizo Paella Nutritional Information

You can see above the nutritional information, but you can find an easier to follow version on the front of the package in the image earlier. This was cheap… I’m not sure if my mother would have bought it otherwise 😆 but it was well worth more than the reduced price.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Chicken and Chorizo Paella ready to eat

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Chicken and Chorizo Paella ready to eat

Here’s the Paella in all it’s glory, did I enjoy it… hell yeah! It was a warm, sticky and comforting. There was a depth of flavour that the Chorizo brought to the party while what I can only describe as the zingyness of the sun-dried tomato paste. The warmth came from smoked paprika, chili and turmeric while the Basil presence bought a slight anise flavour. I thoroughly enjoyed this as you can tell and for the price and for the ease of cooking would give it an eight out of ten.8 stars

We’ve got Strictly Suppers #3 Quick Step Leftover Fish Cakes coming up on the weekend and then a review of Princes Chicken in a White Wine Sauce on Tuesday.

What did you think of the recipe on the weekend, did you enjoy it , did you try it. Let me know, I’d love to hear from anyone who has tested my recipes, or my reviews. Had the pleasure of seeing one of my oldest friends (not in age of course in friendship duration) Marc one of my best friends from school and his mother Tuesday, it’s been a long time but it’s good to catch up.  Hayleigh and Dave called up on Monday too, that was also lovely, it’s nice when people you don’t see often come to see you.
