Time-Saving Tuesday – Tesco Italian Spaghetti Carbonara

Time-Saving Tuesday – Tesco Italian Spaghetti Carbonara in it’s packaging

Here’s something I wouldn’t normally eat, it’s Spaghetti, I’m not a lover of the long strands of pasta, they don’t go well with my fear of choking 😀 . But I bought this to try and overcome that fear…. How brave am I lol

Time-Saving Tuesday – Tesco Italian Spaghetti Carbonara, nutritional information

Time-Saving Tuesday – Tesco Italian Spaghetti Carbonara, nutritional information

The nutritional information is clear, the whole packaging was clear and easy to read, although it was black and white some people with certain medical conditions may have difficulty reading it. Personally I feel the calorie content of 762Kcal, 37.8g Fat and 19.4g Saturated Fat is high. I decided to look in to the recommended levels of these ingredients. According to the NHS.UK website…

  • the average man should eat no more than 30g of saturated fat a day

  • the average woman should eat no more than 20g of saturated fat a day

The website also went on to say about the different levels, this dish would be considered high because it had more than 5g of Saturated fat per 100g. There was a red marker on the front of the package, all the key figures of this dish were high, now I feel like I probably shouldn’t have eaten this lol. I’m going to look into this more and maybe see if I can make it myself and hopefully reduce the bad elements.

The packet described the product as:

Spaghetti and beech smoked bacon in a creamy cheese sauce.

The ingredients list is straight forward enough, things you’d expect to find in a Carbonara. I don’t quite know what the purpose of the Pork Gelatine in the ingredients were, so I asked Tesco? I sent them a tweet eight days ago…. no reply as yet 😡 will let you know when I do get one though.

Time-Saving Tuesday – Tesco Italian Spaghetti Carbonara, cooking instructions

The cooking instructions were great, they were clear to understand and although not displaying times for my microwave it was easy to work out the correct time.

This wasn’t a bad ready meal in all fairness, it wasn’t my favourite but itI don’t have any doubt that some people would really enjoy it. The pasta was ok, it was a little chewy but I’m not daft that was probably the way I cooked it. The sauce was creamy but slightly claggy, the pasta was stuck together too, I did stir it but it didn’t seem to make a difference. The sauce didn’t really have the smoky flavour to it that I was expecting and the bacon was pointless, they weren’t really big enough to taste.5 stars

I’d award this five stars, the packaging was clear, the instructions were straightforward and the taste wasn’t too bad. It’s not the best meal I’ve had from Tesco but it’s not the worst. Maybe some more garlic and a bigger hit of smokiness and we’d have been ok.Wheelie Good Meals Social Networking

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Chicken and Chorizo Paella

This was a surprise for me because my mother bought it while out shopping with her friend one day. I didn’t know what to expect if I’m honest but I thought I’d give it a go…. it’s rude not to 😆

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Chicken and Chorizo Paella in it's packaging

The package weighed 330g which obviously included the packaging but I had my doubts as to how filling it would be, I was wrong it was really filling and certainly enough for a light lunch. The Paella can be warmed, see the cooking instructions below:

The cooking instructions were easy to follow, and were very informative, they helped you to cook it from frozen or from chilled. The only negative would be that they didn’t take into account a lower wattage microwave…. like the one I bought off Noah when he dismantled his ark 😉 !

The ingredient list is also excellent because it doesn’t contain anything that I hadn’t heard of and the majority of them I’d used myself in previous recipes. The list was quite mouth watering really, it was almost as good as the meal itself.

You can see above the nutritional information, but you can find an easier to follow version on the front of the package in the image earlier. This was cheap… I’m not sure if my mother would have bought it otherwise 😆 but it was well worth more than the reduced price.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Chicken and Chorizo Paella ready to eat

Here’s the Paella in all it’s glory, did I enjoy it… hell yeah! It was a warm, sticky and comforting. There was a depth of flavour that the Chorizo brought to the party while what I can only describe as the zingyness of the sun-dried tomato paste. The warmth came from smoked paprika, chili and turmeric while the Basil presence bought a slight anise flavour. I thoroughly enjoyed this as you can tell and for the price and for the ease of cooking would give it an eight out of ten.8 stars

We’ve got Strictly Suppers #3 Quick Step Leftover Fish Cakes coming up on the weekend and then a review of Princes Chicken in a White Wine Sauce on Tuesday.

Had the pleasure of seeing one of my oldest friends (not in age of course in friendship duration) Marc one of my best friends from school and his mother Tuesday, it’s been a long time but it’s good to catch up.  Hayleigh and Dave called up on Monday too, that was also lovely, it’s nice when people you don’t see often come to see you.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Tinned Chilli Con Carne

Forgive me readers for I have sinned…. it’s been 9 days since my last proper post!

Keri, Alice and Ben ready for Michael Jackson meets Meat Loaf

Keri, Alice and Ben ready for Michael Jackson meets Meat Loaf

The world has gone mad, since my last post I’ve had wheelchair melt down’s, I’ve been working on a new business start up, watched a fantastic Michael Jackson and Meat Loaf tribute act with Keri, Ben and Alice, visits from both Hayleigh and Stacey, updated to Windows 10 ( 🙁 ) oh and I may now soon be running one of the pool leagues I play in with Keri…. are you tired yet, you should be…. I am 😯 !

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Tinned Chilli Con Carne – In it’s tin

Anyway, the truth is I’ve been finding blogging a bit difficult in amongst ll the silly grown up s**t I’ve had to do! And I could even have been accused of losing a bit of motivation, until last night. I suppose I’ve had a bit of a realisation that sometimes you just have to stop, you can only do what you can do. I finally got to have a catch up with Greg over a meal and a beer last night…. not the best steak I’ve had (ok I’ve only had two) but it was a good night. Our catch ups are often very cathartic, well for me at least

9oz Sirloin Steak From Weatherspoons Aberdare.... a bit fatty and not nice to eat on this occasion

9oz Sirloin Steak From Weatherspoons Aberdare…. a bit fatty and not nice to eat on this occasion

So on to today’s review, we’re looking at Tesco Everyday Value Tinned Chilli Con Carne.  Before I start the review you can read how I made Mags Cheats Chilli Con Carne or read my review of Asda Chilli Con Carne and Boiled Rice.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Tinned Chilli Con Carne - Information on the back of the tin

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Tinned Chilli Con Carne – Information on the back of the tin

You can see the ingredients and nutritional information above, in case you can’t read the key ingredients were:

Tomato Purée, Red Kidney Beans, Beef, Rehydrated Onion, Red Pepper, Green Pepper, Cayenne Pepper, Garlic Powder, Cumin Powder

Ding dong! These are pretty much the ingredients I use to make my Chilli Con Carne’s bar the Rehydrated Onion (I use proper onion) and I don’t use Green Pepper, you can’t say fairer than that! However, there were some ingredients I wasn’t so familiar with:

Textured Wheat Protein, Malted Barley Extract, Modified Maize Starch and Colour (Paprika Extract).

If you know what any of them are please let me know because I’m baffled! The can contained 400Kcal, 10.2g fat (of which 4.4g was saturated) and 2.4g of salt! I’m going to learn what all these mean in time, if you know share your knowledge with me!

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Tinned Chilli Con Carne - Served with quick cook boiled rice

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Tinned Chilli Con Carne – Served with quick cook boiled rice

My mother and I have had this several times, as you can see above we’ve eaten it with rice, I’ve also had it with chips. It’s a really nice quick and easy meal, takes little effort to cook as it can be heated in the microwave or in a sauce pan and is tasty. Taking into account everything, and, very importantly its price I’d score this one an eight out of ten.8 starsMy only one drawback is the texture was a little sloppy at times, the kidney beans didn’t stand up very well and the meat was a bit mushy. That being said, it was just up my street with my teeth and my irrational fear of choking. I’d definitely buy this one again because it had a depth of flavour you wouldn’t expect from such a shop’s own branded ready meal, especially not one in a tin. You could pick the earthy cumin out and there was a slight spice that wasn’t too “smack you in the face” but was more of a gentle cwtch (hug to all your non welshies).  Well done Tesco, you’ve done good!

I bought that one because it’s a break from the norm, what’s next (shrugs head) who knows? I will, I promise, be braining you my Mystery Bag Meals post this week, it’s written up and waiting to go, and later on in the week sharing with you mine and Alice’s Pasta Disaster!

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Finest Chicken Madeira & Braised Rice With Mushrooms

It’s that time of the week again, it’s #TST time… I’ve got a jingle playing in my head already 😆 … I need more sleep 🙄 ! This was a ready meal I bought from Tesco some time ago, I don’t know what made me buy it because I’m not, as you know, a mushroom fan… I suppose I’m not a fun guy really 😥 !

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Finest Chicken Madeira & Braised Rice With Mushrooms - In The Box

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Finest Chicken Madeira & Braised Rice With Mushrooms – In The Box

Firstly the packaging was really clear, I don’t know if black and white meets RNIB “Clear Print Guidelines” but it looked classy and was clear to distinguish. Clear packaging makes distinguishing the product easy for people with a visual impairments.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Finest Chicken Madeira & Braised Rice With Mushrooms – Cooking Instructions

I apologise for the poor quality picture above 😳 , it does display the cooking instructions honestly! They were inappropriate for my microwave because it’s 700W, the instructions here were for 800W and 900W, I think companies should be more mindful that there are some older microwaves out there which only generate 700W and 750W.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Finest Chicken Madeira & Braised Rice With Mushrooms - Nutritional Information

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Finest Chicken Madeira & Braised Rice With Mushrooms – Nutritional Information

Again, apologies for the poor quality picture of the Nutritional Information above, I think I was having an off day! I have no idea what these statistics mean but there is 10.4g of Saturated Fats, and 1.9g of Salt. These seem high to me, although, as I said I’m no expert in these matters. What are your opinions on them, let me know?

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Finest Chicken Madeira & Braised Rice With Mushrooms Plated Up And Ready To Eat

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Finest Chicken Madeira & Braised Rice With Mushrooms Plated Up And Ready To Eat

The sauce was stunning, it was rich, velvety and deep in flavours. The rice was soft and tasty, however, the mushroom slices were too big for me so as you can see I left them to one side above. The chicken was succulent and soft to eat which was a bonus in my eyes. I really enjoyed this recipe, the box describes it as:

Tender British chicken breasts, in a creamy sauce, made with Madeira wine from a family business in Funchal. Served with delicious braised rice with chestnut, Portobello & button mushrooms.

I’d never, ever, heard of braised rice but I’ve looked in to it and it’s cooking rice in the oven… did you know that… ok ssshhh I’m a bit twp! I thoroughly enjoyed this one and would recommend it to anyone, I always mock my aunty who doesn’t like coffee but likes coffee sweets and chocolates – I’m not that different lol I don’t like mushrooms but I do like the taste of them in sauces and this sauce was lovely. I’d give this a 8 out of 10 easily, it was great.8 stars Coming next we have the Scallops with Pea and Mint Purée that Greg helped me make and Dean Edwards’ Lamb Kofta Curry with Greg’s Saffron Rice. Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Classic Lamb Hot Pot

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Classic Lamb Hot Pot (Belated)

Aw shizzle (I’m late) ok well it’s only an hour or so but I’m late.  Well this was written before I went to pool earlier, for those of you who don’t know I am the captain of a pool team.  We have a great group of boys but we’re not very successful, I was subtle in the way I worded that because we’re better than our results show… well they are anyway I’m just pants lol  😥 ! We lost 8 – 1 tonight, so here’s an uplifting comforting ready meal to share with you, while you share in the glory of our one win  😉 !

Now you’ll remember I reviewed the Tesco Everyday Value Minced Beef Hotpot. I quite liked it, I wasn’t giving star rating out then, but if I did it would have been a 5 or 6 out of ten, which isn’t bad really.

This one on the other hand is in the Tesco Classic range… what does that mean, well it’s meant to be premium, is it? I’ve got to say at this point I bought this ready meal myself and was not paid or sponsored to write this review, all the contents are my own views and opinions…. I’m sure you know that by now 😛

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Classic Lamb Hot Pot - In Its Box

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Classic Lamb Hot Pot – In Its Box

The main big difference in this hot pot to it’s lesser cousin is MEAT! This contains lamb and the other contained beef…which is more genuine, you tell me. The list of ingredients was quite clear and concise and the nutritional information was clear to understand. The pack contained 429 calories, it was a portion for one (slightly greedy person) or two people on a diet!

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Classic Lamb Hot Pot - Nutritional Information

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Classic Lamb Hot Pot – Nutritional Information

There was a lack of cooking instructions for my prehistoric microwave but I worked it out… ’cause I’m good like that 😛 ! It was quick and easy to cook and took around fifteen (15) minutes roughly with standing time.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Classic Lamb Hot Pot - Cooking Instructions

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Classic Lamb Hot Pot – Cooking Instructions

The packaging was clear and easy to read, not sure about the orange background (pictured above) but on the whole it was clear. It is described on the box as

Tender minced lamb in a rich sauce with vegetables and thyme topped with golden sauté potatoes

I think that’s a fair assessment, it was rich and unctuous, the potatoes weren’t problematic they were crisp and tasty, I’m loving the taste of thyme and it came through well here. The other vegetables in this dish were great, I think the barley was an added bonus too, something different to bring to the party.

7 stars

This was a definite 7 out of ten, I really enjoyed it and would buy it again without a doubt. There’ll be more reviews from Tesco’s ready Meals coming soon and next week we’ll have my take on a quick and easy cooked breakfast!  Don’t judge this ready meal on the photograph below, It’s a wheelie bad photo (see what I did there 😆 ) it it’s worth trying… and if Greg, Chris, Ben “The Hair” or Alice are reading this they’d say “Bad Quality Photo Boy!” (I’ll explain that another time 😯 )

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Classic Lamb Hot Pot – Plated Up And Ready To Be Eaten

This week I’ll be posting my review (at last, ok I know I’m pants at getting stuff done but it’s nearly ready) of my meal at the Hardwick, don’t miss it.

See you soon!
