Don’t all shout at me, I know I’ve said I don’t eat rice these days but this review was written some time ago but never published.  This is Hunters Chicken and from the Weight Watchers range, a range in which we’ve already seen us review the impressive Salmon and Broccoli Wedge Melt  and the less so impressive Thai Green Chicken Curry.

Time-Saving Tuesday – Weight Watchers Hunters Chicken with Brown and Wild Rice – Ingredients and Nutritional Information

You can see the ingredients and nutritional information above, you’ll notice there was 352Kcal (calories per pack) of which 4.2g were fat.  As I’m now on a low carb diet… I wouldn’t be eating this because of the rice, it’s a whopping 57g of Carbohydrates which is about more than I plan to eat in a three days.  The ingredient list is awesome, because it almost tells you how to make BBQ Sauce.  Hunter’s Chicken is chicken in a BBQ Sauce, it can be topped with cheese and is often found on gastro pub menus.

The cooking instructions are easy to follow and include instructions for microwaves which are 750W and 850W.  The printing is clear to understand and spread out fairly well.  The packaging was very clear all round and in my opinion was not too difficult to read.

If this dish hadn’t had the rice to accompany it I would have really enjoyed it, The Hunters Chicken element was really lovely, chunks of chicken which were succulent and a rich BBQ sauce made for a really enjoyable meal… then there was the rice!  I’m writing this fresh today but I’m going off my notes at the time, the grains of rice was like bullets, I don’t think it was the way the dish cooked because everything else was really nice.  Apart from the rice I’d buy this again, but as it comes with the rice I’m only scoring it a 6 out of ten.5 stars

I’m back later in the week with a recipe, and then it’s Party time on Friday as we get the band back together so to speak.  Greg my mother and I are off to Caradog’s for my mother’s birthday meal… bring on the fun and food!  Remember you can join us on social media and share with us your thoughts, recipes, and more.Wheelie Good Meals Social Networking

Hope you’re all having a good week so far and not suffering in the heat too much!

See you at the end of the week with a great recipe.

Time-Saving Tuesday – Tesco Italian Spaghetti Carbonara in it’s packaging

Here’s something I wouldn’t normally eat, it’s Spaghetti, I’m not a lover of the long strands of pasta, they don’t go well with my fear of choking 😀 . But I bought this to try and overcome that fear…. How brave am I lol

Time-Saving Tuesday – Tesco Italian Spaghetti Carbonara, nutritional information

Time-Saving Tuesday – Tesco Italian Spaghetti Carbonara, nutritional information

The nutritional information is clear, the whole packaging was clear and easy to read, although it was black and white some people with certain medical conditions may have difficulty reading it. Personally I feel the calorie content of 762Kcal, 37.8g Fat and 19.4g Saturated Fat is high. I decided to look in to the recommended levels of these ingredients. According to the NHS.UK website…

  • the average man should eat no more than 30g of saturated fat a day

  • the average woman should eat no more than 20g of saturated fat a day

The website also went on to say about the different levels, this dish would be considered high because it had more than 5g of Saturated fat per 100g. There was a red marker on the front of the package, all the key figures of this dish were high, now I feel like I probably shouldn’t have eaten this lol. I’m going to look into this more and maybe see if I can make it myself and hopefully reduce the bad elements.

The packet described the product as:

Spaghetti and beech smoked bacon in a creamy cheese sauce.

The ingredients list is straight forward enough, things you’d expect to find in a Carbonara. I don’t quite know what the purpose of the Pork Gelatine in the ingredients were, so I asked Tesco? I sent them a tweet eight days ago…. no reply as yet 😡 will let you know when I do get one though.

The cooking instructions were great, they were clear to understand and although not displaying times for my microwave it was easy to work out the correct time.

This wasn’t a bad ready meal in all fairness, it wasn’t my favourite but itI don’t have any doubt that some people would really enjoy it. The pasta was ok, it was a little chewy but I’m not daft that was probably the way I cooked it. The sauce was creamy but slightly claggy, the pasta was stuck together too, I did stir it but it didn’t seem to make a difference. The sauce didn’t really have the smoky flavour to it that I was expecting and the bacon was pointless, they weren’t really big enough to taste.5 stars

I’d award this five stars, the packaging was clear, the instructions were straightforward and the taste wasn’t too bad. It’s not the best meal I’ve had from Tesco but it’s not the worst. Maybe some more garlic and a bigger hit of smokiness and we’d have been ok.Wheelie Good Meals Social Networking

As always you can get in touch using the social networks above, I’d love to hear from you. How are your Christmas preparations going, are you all ready? I’ve done all my shopping and they’re all wrapped so just bring on the festivities. On the weekend I’ll be sharing with you my take on Rachel Khoo’s Cauliflower Cheese Burgers, they’re totally veggie and great as a starter or main course… or even as a snack!wheelie-good-meals-christmas-door-web-

I’d like to thank Greg (for his company, on our trips away and his photography and not to mention his driving), my mother Mags (for being my sous chef and chief taster, and for putting up with me), Chris (for his technical help), Melanie (Melanie’s Food Adventures for listening to me moan and for her guest posts, which have been some of the most popular posts to date), Alice and Heather (for their ideas), Dave (for his fantastic artwork), Kirsty (for her photography) and Sharon (for the glass). Thanks also to everyone who hosts the linkies I’ve linked up with over the past year, and I’d especially like to thank you all for your support and for stopping by week after week to read the posts.

I doubt I’ll be posting anything until after the new year, so just in case I don’t I’d like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Tesco Chicken and Chorizo Paella

This was a surprise for me because my mother bought it while out shopping with her friend one day. I didn’t know what to expect if I’m honest but I thought I’d give it a go…. it’s rude not to 😆

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Chicken and Chorizo Paella in it's packaging

The package weighed 330g which obviously included the packaging but I had my doubts as to how filling it would be, I was wrong it was really filling and certainly enough for a light lunch. The Paella can be warmed, see the cooking instructions below:

The cooking instructions were easy to follow, and were very informative, they helped you to cook it from frozen or from chilled. The only negative would be that they didn’t take into account a lower wattage microwave…. like the one I bought off Noah when he dismantled his ark 😉 !

The ingredient list is also excellent because it doesn’t contain anything that I hadn’t heard of and the majority of them I’d used myself in previous recipes. The list was quite mouth watering really, it was almost as good as the meal itself.

You can see above the nutritional information, but you can find an easier to follow version on the front of the package in the image earlier. This was cheap… I’m not sure if my mother would have bought it otherwise 😆 but it was well worth more than the reduced price.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Chicken and Chorizo Paella ready to eat

Here’s the Paella in all it’s glory, did I enjoy it… hell yeah! It was a warm, sticky and comforting. There was a depth of flavour that the Chorizo brought to the party while what I can only describe as the zingyness of the sun-dried tomato paste. The warmth came from smoked paprika, chili and turmeric while the Basil presence bought a slight anise flavour. I thoroughly enjoyed this as you can tell and for the price and for the ease of cooking would give it an eight out of ten.8 stars

We’ve got Strictly Suppers #3 Quick Step Leftover Fish Cakes coming up on the weekend and then a review of Princes Chicken in a White Wine Sauce on Tuesday.

Had the pleasure of seeing one of my oldest friends (not in age of course in friendship duration) Marc one of my best friends from school and his mother Tuesday, it’s been a long time but it’s good to catch up.  Hayleigh and Dave called up on Monday too, that was also lovely, it’s nice when people you don’t see often come to see you.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Morrisons NuMe Cumberland Pie

This is another one of Heather’s brilliant bargains… oh wait that sounds like a feature on its own lol. This was Morrisons NuMe Cumberland Pie, I’ve never really had a Cumberland Pie before, so was looking forward to it, something new is always good.

Time-Saving Tuesdays - Morrisons NuMe Cumberland Pie in it's packet

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Morrisons NuMe Cumberland Pie in it’s packet

The packet describes the pie as being:

beef mince, carrots and onions in a comforting gravy all topped with fluffy mash and crispy cheese breadcrumbs.

So what’s the difference between this and a Shepherd’s Pie you may ask, well there doesn’t appear to be one other than a layer of breadcrumbs. For more information on Cumberland Pie click here.

I know the picture is blurred above but you can find out more about it and the cooking times by visit the NuMe website. I’ve messaged Morrison’s and asked them about the ingredients I’ve talked about in earlier posts. Here’s the reply they gave me to my tweet.

The reply is clear enough and makes perfect sense, I just wish there was a way of passing this information out to the public so we knew what we were eating.

The nutritional information is quite good in this with it having 297calories and fairly low levels of salt and sugar. The cooking instructions were clear and easy to follow, though you wont get a picture off me for them because they were partially obstructed by sale barcodes. To find out about the cooking instructions visit the website mentioned above.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Morrisons NuMe Cumberland Pie – Ready to be eaten

This was great, really tasty and a pleasure to eat. The gravy was deep and rich, the minced meat was easy to eat, the carrots and onions were easy to eat. The mashed potatoes was fluffy and not heavy and claggy like some other ready meals, the breadcrumbs were crunchy and cheesy and added a different dimension to what was in essence a Shepherd’s Pie. I thoroughly enjoyed this and would certainly buy it again, oh wait I did on the weekend lol with that in mind I’ve given it seven out of ten.7 stars

I’ve got a few good posts coming up, Strictly Suppers #1 will be out on Thursday, then we’ve got a review of the Brecon Food Festival which Greg and I attended on the weekend and then next Tuesday a Tomato Risotto cooked in the microwave.

I’ve been tweeting, pinning and sharing other recipes on facebook lately, go over and have a look, there’s loads to read and enjoy.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Morrisons Macaroni Cheese

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Morrisons Macaroni Cheese - Front Packaging

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Morrisons Macaroni Cheese – Front Packaging

Ok so I look like I’m addicted to Macaroni Cheese, I’ve reviewed three so far. On 11th August 2014 I reviewed Asda Macaroni Cheese, I wasn’t overly impressed with it, in fact my words were that I “felt a bit let down by this as I was quite looking forward to it”. I then reviewed Tesco Everyday Value Macaroni Cheese on 22nd September 2014, I said that there was a topping missing and that it needed “lots more seasoning needed to be added to this to make it tasty”. So let us see if things can get better with this one.

I’m not going to lie my photographs are horrific of this ready meal, Greg would say my photographs are always horrific lol, I can’t take a good photo to save my life.

The picture I took of the nutritional information is very blurred, so I’ve taken a screen shot of it below, this picture also includes the ingredients.

The ingredient list didn’t throw up anything that I hadn’t seen in any other lists but I do worry about eating something that is called “Nicotinic Acid” and “Thiamin”… what are these, well I’ve decided to tweet Morisons, and the other Ready Meal manufacturers that I review to see what they say…. let’s wait and see what they say!

The screen shot above is taken from the Morrisons website and shows that the cooking instructions are clear and include my cronky old microwave. On the packet the instructions are clear and laid out well, including the oven instructions which is always a bonus.

The picture above shows the cooking instructions taken from the actual packet…. as opposed to downloaded from the net. It shows how clear the packaging was and how easy the cooking instructions were to follow.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Morrisons Macaroni Cheese - Ready to eat

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Morrisons Macaroni Cheese – Ready to eat

You’ll remember I reviewed Asda’s Rockin Chilli & Chorizo Mac and Cheese on on 22nd July this year. I gave that one a 6 out of 10, it was marked down because it had to go in the oven, however, it had great taste and a warming level of heat from the spices and the Chorizo.6 stars

This one too had nice warmth to it, warmth that was comforting. There was a texture on top which I actually thought was breadcrumbs but it wasn’t. The sauce was cheesey and rich and just what you’d want on a cold winter’s night. The heat came from the mustard which added a good depth of flavour to it, my only real negative was that I thought the texture could have been improved. Like some of the previous Macaroni Cheese I’ve reviewed it was a bit congealed and claggy. However, it was still a very tasty meal.
