Time-Saving Tuesdays – 2 Ready Meals From Annabel Karmel

Time-Saving Tuesdays – 2 Ready Meals From Annabel Karmel

You may remember that some time ago… as a plonker…. I bought two children’s ready meals made by Annabel Karmel. The first one I’ve reviewed was the “Delicious Beef Cottage Pie” on 9th June 2015. When reviewing that I gave it a 3 when looking at it as an adult meal and 6 when looking at it from a child’s persepective.

Was I harsh, well a little it probably could have had a higher score as a child’s ready meal but it’s how I felt at the time. Anyway onwards to the second ready meal I bought from Annabel Karmel Chicken, Tomato and Veggie Risotto.

Like the Cottage Pie, I think the package is great, it was clean and eye catching, it was concise but yet engaging for children. It had a clear description of what the product was and also a nice message from Annabel herself

As a mum I understand how important it is to give our children the best, even on those days. That’s why I’ve created a range of easy meals inspired by my trusty homemade recipes. They are full of flavour and fun to eat – just like my cookbook favourites. Toddlers and children will love them.

The box describes it as “Just like you’d make it at home” – I’m not sure if that’s strictly true because I’ve never made a risotto at home 🙄 . I know Mel has over at Melanie’s Food Adventures so maybe we should ask her what a homemade Risotto is like 😆 .

You may remember I asked Melanie for her advice on the nutritional information as I don’t have a clue. I noticed that the quantities of Salt and Sugars are much higher in this ready meal, I’m wondering why this is, below is a table of the breakdown of Salt, Sugar and Protein in both the Cottage Pie and the Risotto.

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Annabel Karmel Chicken, Tomato and Veggie Risotto ingredients list

I really liked the ingredient list, like the rest of the packaging it was clear and well laid out, there was very little to confuse me other than anti-oxidant which I have no clue about. I looked it up on Wikipedia (my sister Heather Googles everything I Wikipedia everything…. it works for me 😀 )! Wikipedia says:

An antioxidant is a molecule that inhibits the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a chemical reaction involving the loss of electrons or an increase in oxidation state. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals. In turn, these radicals can start chain reactions.

Now the sciency people would understand this, people like Ben Way who have a handle of maths and science but for me it sounds like the start of one of my friend Graham’s music quizzes. The Free Radicals are a group based in America and well Chain Reaction…. (sings to himself) “And I was there and not dancing with anyone, You took a little, then you took me over, You set your mark on stealing my heart away, Crying, trying, anything for you….” I digress 😳 !

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Annabel Karmel Chicken, Tomato and Veggie Risotto cooking instructions

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Annabel Karmel Chicken, Tomato and Veggie Risotto cooking instructions

The microwave cooking instructions were really clear, however, it didn’t give the right time for my microwave. It did however, tell you how to cook it from chilled which you don’t see often, this I think is a really good idea. The cooking instructions for using an oven were also very clear and equally as informative.

The packaging described this ready meal as being

Chicken breast cooked with Arborio rice and vegetables.

I think this was a really simplistic way at looking at something which had a great deal of flavour, for a child’s ready meal. It was quite tomatoey with the sun-dried tomatoes and the tomato paste, I also felt the presence of two types of cheese worked well and held all the ingredients together. The rice was soft, it didn’t offer a great deal of textural difference to the dish, but there was chicken!!

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Annabel Karmel Chicken, Tomato and Veggie Risotto, look at that chunk of chicken

Time-Saving Tuesdays – Annabel Karmel Chicken, Tomato and Veggie Risotto, look at that chunk of chicken

Yes there was chicken lol! This was something I was so impressed with, the dish was quite soft, I understand that it was a child’s ready meal and that’s why but the presence of the nice sized pieces of chicken made it feel a bit more real, like it was a smaller portion of an adult’s ready meal.

What would I score this, well the last ready meal by Annabel Karmel I reviewed I gave two scores one for children (6) and one for adults (3). I’m not going to do that for this one, I’m going to give it one score, 5 out of 10. I enjoyed it, it was tasty, light and had plenty of chicken. Both these ready meals were a happy accident for me and I’d happily eat them again, I’m no expert on what children eat I’d certainly recommend these ready meals to my parent friends.5 starsCome back Thursday for my Sausage Meatballs in a Spicy Tomato Sauce. Time-Saving Tuesdays

Time-Saving Tuesdays…. the way forward!

Time-Saving Tuesdays

Time-Saving Tuesdays

Well I’ve been playing it over in my head for the last few weeks, and I’ve decided to axe Ready Meal Mondays (“yes, yes, we know this already” I hear you cry)! But like Sir Bob, Lord of the Rats of Boomtown “I Don’t Like Mondays”.

To make it easier for myself, and after all we all wan easy life, I’ve decided to start Time-Saving Tuesdays or #TimeSavingTuesdays as it’ll affectionately be known 😀 , this could take many forms, some examples that I’ve been thinking of are

  • Equipment reviews to make cooking and food preparation easier for people with varying disabilities.
  • Micro Meal Reviews (don’t panic they’re not going anywhere)
  • Reviews of snack and other quick types of food such as microwaveable rice
  • Quick ideas suitable for lunch in work or packed lunches for children in schools.

The quick and easy time-saving idea is also very important for me because, as you probably know I play pool on a Tuesday so when I eat either at home or in work I’m usually in a hurry.

I really do promise that this feature will take over from Ready Meal Monday introduce a whole new range of reviews, tips, recipes and much more.

I’d like to think that my recipes are fairly easy to follow and my reviews are for microwaveable meals which are quite easy to make for people with varying disabilities. I do know that I don’t really cover the disability concept as much as I should and that is going to change. We have a youtube channel launching in March and I hope to not only cover Time-Saving ideas, easy recipes but also cooking techniques which are friendly toward people with disabilities. I’ll also be reviewing products and recipe books.

I’ve made some changes to the blog, you may have noticed… but hopefully you haven’t because that means it’s been pretty seamless.  We are now a self hosted blog and thanks to my good friend Chris at Cynon Valley Hosting for his patience and for helpful advice from Andrew and Ryan at at Tantrwm we’re finally getting somewhere…. Wheelie Good Meals has grown up!

Sign up for updates as I am hoping to be working with fellow bloggers as 2015 progresses and serving you up some more recipes from chef’s I admire and enjoy watching.

Remember you can always get involved if you are a foodie and have ideas, or you’ve cooked one of our recipes then let me know. Or if you are a fellow blogger and would like to work with me then drop be a line.

Take care, see you all tomorrow!

Ready Meal Monday – Tesco Everyday Value Chicken Curry and Rice

Well here we go in the first of our Micro Monday Tuesday theme, I thought it would only be fitting to start with a ready meal. This week we go to Tesco for their Chicken Curry and Rice. The packaging describes it as being.

Tender pieces of chicken breast in a mild curry sauce served with rice.

It also adds that there are “no artificial preservatives, flavourings or colours” something that is always good to know.

Ready Meal Monday – Tesco Everyday Value Chicken Curry and RiceCurry is such a bland term, I may have said before it’s not really recognised by the Indians, it’s more of a westernised term for gravy or sauce. There are many, many different varieties of curries in Asian food that one generic term doesn’t cover it.

Mico Mondays – Tesco Everyday Value Chicken Curry and Rice Ingredient List

Ready Meal Monday – Tesco Everyday Value Chicken Curry and Rice Ingredient List

This was nice, nice is another bland word I know lol but i don’t know another word to use really. It didn’t set my world alight but I certainly eat it again. Going back to my comment earlier about the different types of curries, this was a little like a Korma. From the first mouthful I could taste coconut in it, this was confirmed by the ingredient list (above). The ingredient list states that the dish contains coconut cream, that gives it it’s rich taste.

Ready Meal Monday – Tesco Everyday Value Chicken Curry and Rice Cooking Times

Ready Meal Monday – Tesco Everyday Value Chicken Curry and Rice Cooking Times

The cooking times (above) were a bit confusing, there is too much repetition and I, honestly feel, that this would confuse someone with a learning disability. I am not electrically minded but even a no-mark like me knows that there is a distinct difference between 650W and 850W so why do the instructions not really reflect that. I have to worry that some people have difficulty in cooking their food because of the timings.

Ready Meal Monday – Tesco Everyday Value Chicken Curry and Rice Nutritional Information

Ready Meal Monday – Tesco Everyday Value Chicken Curry and Rice Nutritional Information

The nutritional information is clear and concise with 465 calories per meal. I’m not dieting during the new year but I am trying to eat a bit more sensibly so I will be trying to get my head around calories and what is healthy and what isn’t :)… can you help? Let me know by emailing us or joining us on social networking.

My only observation is that there was a lot of rice, for me, and it’s just a personal opinion the ratio of rice to sauce wasn’t balanced well and I ended up leaving some of the rice.

As I said earlier I would order this again, but it wasn’t the best Tesco Ready Meal I’ve had (hence the 5 stars).  The rice, although in my mind too much, was fluffy and easy to eat, the chicken was soft and moist and the sauce was tasty (coconutey and tomatoey <excuse spelling>) and was rich in colour.

Two posts in quick succession, I’m pushing it this week – you can tell I can’t sleep O_o.  Ok, I know I’m a little late, but I’ve been a lot later lol 😀

So we’re off to Spain this week on our travels in search of Ready Meal loveliness and a Chicken, Chorizo and King Prawn Paella (from Asda not Spain 🙂 )! Just like the Italians are inform us of the correct way to pronounce bruschetta, the Spanish are equally as keen we get the pronunciation of Paella correct. It’s pronounced Pah – EH – ya the double l makes the sound of a y. This is part of the Asda Chosen by you range and is described as being:

Succulent Chicken Breast, juicy King Prawns with added water, spicy Chorizo and fabulously al dente rice in our vibrant tomato, red wine and smoked paprika sauce.

The nutritional content of this Ready Meal can be found below, at the end of the Ready Meals Monday series, which is coming up at the end of the year (I know don’t get upset it will improve as Micro Mondays <title to be announced> 💡 ) I am going to be giving a breakdown of the calories and fat content of all the Ready Meals we’ve reviewed:

Ready Meal Monday – Asda Chicken, Chorizo and King Prawn Paella Nutritional Information

Ready Meal Monday – Asda Chicken, Chorizo and King Prawn Paella Nutritional Information

Edwina-CurrieThe sauce was (as described) tomatoey with a slight hit of paprika, the prawns were nice but I felt the dish was let down by the vegetables. The vegetables were harder than Edwina Currie doing a Bushtucker Trial. In the same way I thought the chicken was tougher than leather and was quite difficult to eat. Now, naturally this may have been the way I cooked it but I followed the packaging instructions (below):

I’ve hinted in previous that I’m overcoming my aversion to Peas but this hasn’t helped. The peas were like bullets and I really had difficulty eating them, I was also put off by the skin on the pepper which kept getting stuck to the roof of my mouth.

Ready Meal Monday – Asda Chicken, Chorizo and King Prawn Paella In All It's Glory

Ready Meal Monday – Asda Chicken, Chorizo and King Prawn Paella In All It’s Glory

I personally felt there was a lot of food here for one person – even for a fatty foodie like me so I shared it with my mother. She really enjoyed it and would order it again, or at least eat it again if it had been ordered. With this in mind I’ve given it a five out of ten. There were elements I liked but probably would have given it a 3/4 out of ten, my mother liked more aspects of it than I did and would have probably given it a six, so we met in the middle… I’m nice like that

5 stars

In the last few weeks we’ve visited India, the West Country, Lancashire, Thai Land and now Spain. Where will our Ready Meal Monday journey take us next week? Will I get it in on time? These are all questions you’ll have to come back to find out. Remember we have our #StrictlySuppers coming up this week and we’ll be going for more of a snack approach (I bet you can’t wait to find out now what it’ll be)!  Don’t forget to check our other #StrictlySuppers recipes, for example the Char-Char-Char-Grilled Chicken from the first week was a corker and would have easily scored a “Ten From Len”

Why not join us on all our social networking pages for sneak previews, updates and much more. Well as they say in Spain “adiós y hasta pronto” (goodbye and see you soon!) 😎
