Ready Meal Monday – Bisto Minced Beef Hot Pot In Its Box

Ready Meal Monday – Bisto Minced Beef Hot Pot

We’re back on the mince again…. as you know I’ve tried Hot Pot before, one of the earlier Ready Meal instalments was Tesco Minced Beef Hot Pot. That ready meal was enjoyable so I was hoping this one would be too, let’s see if it was 🙂

This was a tasty ready meal, it had a nice gravy, not quite as deep a taste as other Bisto ready meals I’ve tested but still quite taste. The mince was soft and not chewy, the carrots were nice soft but still had a taste to them. Bisto said on it’s packaging that there would be no artificial preservatives, no hydrogenated fats and 100% minced beef (that’s reassuring lol). It described the product as

A classic Minced Beef Hot Pot made with minced beef and vegetables in a rich thick gravy, topped with sliced potatoes.

You can see the ingredients list below, the only issue with this recipe is the term vegetables…. that included peas!!

Now as I’ve said in the past I am not so fussy on peas, but times are a changing! I didn’t have a problem with the peas in this recipe they were present they were not mushy but they were not a problem for a Pea-o-phobe like me! The nutritional information can be found below, I’ve also provided a comparison between the Tesco Minced Beef Hot Pot.

Again, following on from the previous Ready Meal Monday review of Sainsbury’s Chicken with A Creamy Vintage Cider Sauce Meal Deal we have another ready meal with very good potatoes. It is refreshing to know that there are some ready meals out there that don’t consist of bullet like potatoes.

The cooking instructions (pictured in the shocking photo 😳 above) were straightforward and easy to understand and included cooking instructions for oven cooking. What do you think of your ready meal instructions and packaging information, let me know?

The whole dish ate well and had a good consistency to it, I enjoyed it and would buy it again. I would rate this six out of ten, it’s not the best Bisto ready meal I’ve had but it’s not the worst ready meal either.

6 stars

I’m not sure what’s coming next, but remember to check back to see what I’m reviewing – I’m looking for your suggestions too, if you have a ready meal you’d like me to review send me a message. Remember to subscribe to the blog and visit us on our social networking page.

Ooops, ok I know what you’re thinking – where the heck is Ready Meal Monday… no… well you should be 🙂 I know I’m a bit late and I apologise for that, I could give you some technical mumbo jumbo about sprites being in my computer and taking over the interweb…. but I won’t! The real reason is I have a limited selection of ready meals in my freezer so the choice was Bisto, Asda or Tesco… As you can see I went with Bisto again! Don’t panic it’s a Lasagne (oh yes, you know… because of the title) lol!

My limited Ready Meal selection is because of my transportation issues, I have to do all my grocery and food shopping online, as do my parents. Hence the sometimes limited selection, however, I will say all the meals I review for Ready Meal Mondays are bought by myself and are not reviewed for or on behalf of anyone.

This was a good one for me because I really enjoyed the Bisto Cottage Pie (see my review here) and was hoping this would be as good. I used to love Lasagne but I’ve had some bad experiences in local pubs and also some ready meals so wasn’t sure what to expect.

I make a fairly mean Lasagne myself and am also very lucky to have two exceptionally good Lasagne makers in Hayleigh and Rhian who both make the most amazing versions of this classic Italian dish, and no ladies I’m not going to choose whose the best… their both special in their own ways 🙂 Ok, back to the ready meal, the box describes this in the following way.

A classic Lasagne made with pasta sheets layered with minced beef in a bolognese sauce, topped with white sauce & grated cheddar Cheese

As you can see above there is also a Quality pledge which states that this ready meal had

  • No artificial preservatives
  • No hydrogenated fats
  • 100% Minced Beef

Three things which are always good to know

The béchamel sauce was tasty and had a nice consistency to it, it had a good flavour of cheese in my opinion. The layers were defined and the meat ragu/sauce between the layers of pasta had a good depth of flavour for a ready meal and had good texture. The problem in my eyes was the pasta. I know pasta is meant to be al dente, al dente is Italian for “To the Tooth” and is defined by Wikipedia in the following way:

In contemporary Italian cooking, the term identifies the ideal consistency for pasta and involves a brief cooking time. Molto al dente is the culinary term for slightly undercooked pasta

I’m all for pasta being undercooked but i felt that this was slightly chewy and almost a bit slimy, if that makes any sense. Now I will concede it could have been a) my microwave or b) my cooking but it’s something to bare in mind. The ingredients and nutritional information can be found below.

I know last week I had a rant about cooking times, well these were plain and simple to understand. I do have to ask the Ready Meal Moguls how much effort it would be to add a column for 700W microwaves, which I have. This surely, isn’t too hard and would make a world of difference….. oh wait, i’m ranting again :)!

The Box for Bisto Cottage Pie

Firstly I have to start with an apology, I know it’s Thursday and I’m not very good with my timings but I’ve had a hectic week. Now before you get the violins out, my busyness has been in a good cause, I’ve been busy preparing for the Youtube Channel launch, which is coming soon. I know posting has been erratic and chaotic but we’re all back on track now. I have my mate Ben Way Boy and my Niece Alice to thank for getting the Youtube channel preparations underway. Well now I’ve got that off my chest let’s talk ready meals, I know I say this all the time but, I’m a bit of a fan of minced beef I’m sure you’re sick of hearing that. And I make a pretty mean cottage pie so when I saw this in the freezer at home I thought I’d see how they compare. This one doesn’t come off that bad I’m surprised to say. It had a fairly deep flavour and the texture was good, the mashed potato was tasty, though not as creamy as I’d have liked. There was a nice rich gravy which was part of the pie filling and it all came together as a really nice ready meal.

I’ll make my own Cottage Pie for you all to see soon, but as a meal for one, something that is quick and easy to prepare I’m very impressed with Bisto’s Cottage Pie.
